Carcinoma developing after gastroplasty and fundoplication has been
documented in only five cases. We report a further case occurring in a
patient 4 years after initial surgery. The tumour originated in the newly
created tubular extension. There was no evidence of a columnar lining in
the true oesophagus prior to surgery. The development, technique and
complications of gastroplasty and partial fundoplication are discussed with
special mention of the diagnostic problems when a tumour develops in a
patient who has undergone this procedure.
