Key Words: Transthoracic echocardiography • Cardiac echinococcus cyst

A 10-year-old boy was presented with fever and chest pain. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed an echinococcus cyst in the left ventricle (Fig. 1). Removal of the cyst was performed through a median sternotomy. Standard technique of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with mild hypothermia (32°C) was used. The pericardial sac was opened. After the heart was emptying by CPB, revision was made. The ‘top’ of the cyst was situated near to the surface of the left ventricle epicardium. The cyst and vesiculae proligens were removed by enucleation in beating heart. Cystic cavity was cleansed by washing with formic acid solution. Capitonage was not performed for this patient. After 8 months follow-up, he is asymptomatic with no signs of recurrences.
