Giant mature teratoma of the pericardium

A 44-year-old woman was followed up for 12 years due to the presence of a pericardial mass. Once compression of the right atrium became evident, the patient underwent excision of the giant mass (Fig. 1 ) with a thoracotomic approach. Histology revealed a mature cystic teratoma of the pericardium (Fig. 2 ).

Fig. 1. (A) The teratoma was excised completely, along with its capsula. The giant mass had a 10 cm x 6 cm dimension. (B) The mass was filled with sebaceous secretions and matted hair, revealing a hair-bearing epidermal lining. Foci of calcifications (containing teeth) were also noted.
